Semana Santa in Castro del Río 2027 Its own saetas, chapel music and the Villa quarter
All the information

About the event
Castro del Río celebrates a Holy Week of Andalusian tourist interest with the Villa quarter as its setting. The brotherhoods have followed the same official route since the 16th century. Music is its great hallmark: chapel choirs and local saetas such as the samaritanas and those of the Vía Sacra, sung in a Madrugá with no band.
Key points
- Festival of Tourist Interest of Andalusia (2001)

What it is / What you will see
Holy Week in Castro del Río, declared of Tourist Interest of Andalusia in 2001, returns from 21 to 28 March 2027. The Villa quarter is the setting for the penitential processions, and all the brotherhoods follow an official route that has not changed since the 16th century. The most distinctive thing is the music. The Madrugá procession goes out with no band and all you hear are Castro's own saetas, such as the samaritanas and those of the Vía Sacra, as well as the chapel choirs. In the procession of Jesús Nazareno, the penitents walk barefoot and you can hear the crosses striking the ground. The Vera Cruz, the oldest brotherhood, goes out on the night of Maundy Thursday.
Getting there and tickets
The brotherhoods set off from their churches in Castro del Río and go through the Villa quarter and the town along the official route. Everything is in the street and free. The 2027 timetables are set by the brotherhoods during Lent. Castro del Río is about 40 km from Córdoba on the A-306, less than half an hour by car. If you go to the Madrugá, be punctual: there is no band music and the silence is part of the experience.
