What it is
The Fiestas Aracelitanas are Lucena's great celebration in honour of its patron saint, María Santísima de Araceli. They revolve around the first Sunday of May, which in 2027 falls on 2 May, and run from Friday to Monday. According to the 2026 programme, they begin with gun salutes at the Castillo del Moral and the switching-on of special illuminations, continue on the Saturday with the offering of flowers and on the Sunday have the solemn mass and the procession of the Virgin, which ends in the Plaza Nueva with fireworks. Monday is children's day. A month later, the romería takes the Virgin back to her sanctuary.
Getting there and tickets
Lucena is about 70 kilometres from Córdoba on the A-45, by car or intercity bus. The street events are free; the procession on Sunday night and the offering on Saturday draw the biggest crowds. They are organised by Lucena Town Council, which publishes the full programme at lucena.es in April. Note: the dates given are an estimate based on the usual calendar, not an official announcement. Before planning your trip, check for confirmation on the organiser's website, which usually publishes it a few months ahead, and book accommodation in advance if you are coming from elsewhere.
