What it is and why 24 October
The date of San Rafael does not depend on any movable calendar: Córdoba celebrates its Guardian every 24 October, and in 2027 it lands on a Sunday, so there will be no usual long weekend. The devotion goes back to the 16th century, with the oath which, according to tradition, the archangel swore to the priest Andrés de las Roelas: "I swear to you by Jesus Christ crucified that I am Raphael, the angel whom God has appointed as guardian of this city". Hence the name of the Iglesia del Juramento and the triunfos, the monuments to the archangel dotted around the city. The brotherhood organises a triduum and a solemn mass, and outside the church the rice perol in the countryside rules the day.
Getting there and what to bear in mind
The Iglesia del Juramento is in the Plaza de San Rafael, in the San Lorenzo neighbourhood, and entry to the services is free; the brotherhood publishes the times in the days beforehand. For the perol, the classic spots are the Los Villares country park and La Asomadilla, where it is worth arriving early to get a table. It is a good day to go round the archangel's triunfos: the one at the Puerta del Puente, the one on the Puente Romano and the one in the Plaza del Potro.
