What it is / What you will see
In Pedroche, a piostro is a horseman or horsewoman with their mount. The typical picture is the gentleman with a pair of harnessed mules and the woman seated on a jamuga side-saddle. The festival, declared of Interés Turístico de Andalucía, is the largest gathering of horses in the province and one of the largest in Andalusia. On the afternoon of 7 September the procession leaves the Plaza del Ejido with the Santa Cecilia band, crosses the bridge over the Santa María stream and parades before the Virgen de Piedrasantas. Afterwards there is mass with the Romero y Encinar choir and the return to the village, which opens the fair. On the morning of the 8th the piostros go back to the chapel for mass and the procession.
