What it is / What you will see
May is Rute's big month and it revolves around the Virgen de la Cabeza, the Morenita. The festivities include the reunion with the Virgin at the Cerro del Cabezo, the farewell, the return, the novena, the pregón and the crowning of the festival queen. It all culminates on the second Sunday of May. In the morning the Virgin goes through her neighbourhood in a very festive procession, with cheers and singing in streets such as Cortijuelos. At night she processes solemnly through the town's main neighbourhoods. During those weeks Rute also opens its patios and holds the Feria de Mayo, with casetas, concerts and a copla gala.
Getting there and tickets
The processions go through the Virgen de la Cabeza neighbourhood and the centre of Rute, and the religious events are free. For the fair and the patios, the Town Council publishes its programme in spring. The 2027 date is worked out from the custom of the second Sunday of May, which falls on the 9th, and has yet to be confirmed. Rute is in the Subbética, an hour and forty minutes from Córdoba on the A-45 and the A-331.
