What it is
The Conjunto Arqueológico Madinat al-Zahra is organising the XII edition of the Visitas Monográficas al Monasterio de San Jerónimo de Valparaíso, together with the building's owners and the University of Córdoba's Departamento de Historia del Arte, Arqueología y Música. There are 16 guided visits spread over eight Saturdays between 3 October and 12 December, coordinated by the lecturer María Ángeles Jordano. The route takes in the forecourt, the restored church, the cloister, the novices' courtyard, the chapter house, the balcony on the façade and the cloister chapels, spaces closed to the public the rest of the year. Founded in the early 15th century, it is one of the great examples of Córdoba Gothic and was restored after it was bought in 1912 by the Marqués del Mérito.
Getting there and tickets
The visits are on Saturdays 3, 17 and 31 October; 7, 14, 21 and 28 November, and 12 December, with two visits of around 105 minutes: from 10:00 to 11:45 and from 12:00 to 13:45. They are free but require prior registration through the link on the official listing. Registration opens on the Monday before each Saturday at 10:00 and closes on the Friday at 12:00. The organisers ask people to avoid Hotmail addresses because of a technical problem. The monastery lies within the grounds of the Conjunto Arqueológico, on the Palma del Río road, kilometre 5.5.
