Landscapes seen by Neanderthals

Artist and researcher Gabriela Amorós Seller presents an individual exhibition at the Córdoba Royal Botanical Garden featuring a selection of her paleoartistic reconstructions of Iberian paleolandscapes. Each piece depicts how the vegetation of different regions of the peninsula might have looked during the Neanderthal period: which species grew, how they were distributed, and what ecosystems they formed. The exhibition is part of the Ethnobotanical Museum's programming, promoting scientific knowledge about plants and environmental awareness through art.

Science turned into imagery

The reconstructions are not imagined landscapes: they are based on scientific data from pollen records, specifically fossil pollen preserved in Neanderthal sites across Iberia. Using these analyses, the artist depicts the plant species and ecosystems documented. Amorós works affiliated with the University of Murcia, between the Department of Plant Biology, the Department of Fine Arts, and the ECCE HOMO research group. Her dual background in art and botany underpins the exhibition.
