  • At 7:30 pm, tickets from 10 to 27 euros

A young orchestra with first-rate teachers

The Orquesta Fundación Barenboim-Said is made up of young performers training at the foundation's Academia de Estudios Orquestales, based in Seville. Its teaching staff are musicians from orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony, the Staatskapelle Berlin, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Leipzig Gewandhaus, as well as international soloists. In recent years it has worked with conductors such as Vasily Petrenko, Pablo Heras-Casado, Juanjo Mena, Nuno Coelho and Oksana Lyniv, and with soloists such as Javier Perianes, Denis Kozhukhin and Michael Barenboim. This date on 30 December at the Gran Teatro is its debut in Córdoba.

Maxim Emelyanychev, conductor and harpsichordist

On the podium will be Maxim Emelyanychev, a Russian conductor and harpsichordist trained at the Moscow Conservatory and one of the leading figures of his generation on the international scene. Since 2013 he has led Il Pomo d'Oro, a period-instrument orchestra, and since 2019 he has been principal conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He is known for the energy of his readings and for his ability to let individual musicianship shine within an ensemble sound. That a conductor of this standing should stand in front of a training orchestra says a great deal about the level of the Academy, and makes the evening a rare opportunity for audiences in Córdoba.

Glinka, Rachmaninov, Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky

The programme brings together four great works of the Russian symphonic repertoire. It opens with the overture to Glinka's ‘Ruslan and Lyudmila’, followed by ‘The Rock’, a symphonic poem by Rachmaninov inspired by a Chekhov story and dedicated to Rimsky-Korsakov, whose ‘Capriccio espagnol’ comes next. It closes with Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74, ‘Pathétique’, regarded as one of the peaks of Romantic symphonic writing for its deep emotional charge and expressive intensity. It is a demanding programme for any orchestra and a very rewarding one for the audience, ending with one of the most overwhelming finales in the whole repertoire.

Tickets, times and getting there

The concert is on Wednesday 30 December at the Gran Teatro in Córdoba, Avenida del Gran Capitán, 3, as part of the IMAE programme. It starts at 7:30 pm and tickets cost between 10 and 27 euros, on sale on the IMAE website and at the theatre box office. It falls in the middle of Christmas in Córdoba, between Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, when the centre is packed and it is worth arriving in good time. This agenda does not organise the concert or sell tickets: it simply gathers the public information so that you have it to hand and do not miss the orchestra's Córdoba debut.
