What you will see
The Berliner Philharmoniker sees out the year from the Philharmonie Berlin with Kirill Petrenko on the podium, and mk2 broadcasts it live. The programme combines humour and orchestral brilliance: the overture to The Merry Wives of Windsor by Otto Nicolai, Prokofiev's Classical Symphony, the tone poem Till Eulenspiegel by Richard Strauss and the overture to The Gypsy Baron by Johann Strauss II. The centrepiece is Shostakovich's Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and String Orchestra, with the young pianist Alexander Malofeev, making his debut with the orchestra, and the principal trumpet David Guerrier. A different way to spend New Year's Eve afternoon before the midnight chimes.
