A Córdoba tradition to start the year

As at the start of every year, the Orquesta de Córdoba opens the calendar with its New Year's Concert at the Gran Teatro. In 2027 there will be two performances, on Friday 1 and Saturday 2 January, as part of the IMAE programme. It is one of the most eagerly awaited dates of Christmas in Córdoba, made for going as a family after New Year's Eve and before Three Kings' Day, with a light programme that mixes home-grown zarzuela with the classic Viennese waltzes. This agenda does not organise the concert or sell tickets: it gathers the public information from the theatre and the orchestra so that you have it to hand.

Zarzuela in the first half

The first half of the programme is a tour of Spanish lyric theatre: the prelude to ‘Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente’ by Chueca, ‘Me llaman la primorosa’ from ‘El barbero de Sevilla’ by Gerónimo Giménez, the intermezzo from ‘La leyenda del beso’ by Soutullo and Vert, the ‘Canción del ruiseñor’ from ‘Doña Francisquita’ by Vives, ‘Pensar en él’ from ‘Marina’ by Arrieta and the intermezzo from ‘El baile de Luis Alonso’, also by Giménez. These are pages any enthusiast recognises from the first notes, with showpiece arias for the soprano and two of the most celebrated orchestral intermezzi in the repertoire.

Waltzes, polkas and a nod to Bernstein

The second half looks to Vienna, as the tradition of 1 January demands: the waltz ‘Artist's Life’, the ‘Hunting Polka’ Op. 373, Adele's aria ‘Spiel ich die Unschuld vom Lande’ from ‘Die Fledermaus’ and, to finish, ‘The Blue Danube’, all by Johann Strauss II, together with the overture to ‘Pique Dame’ by Franz von Suppé. In between comes a surprise: ‘Glitter and Be Gay’, the coloratura aria from Leonard Bernstein's ‘Candide’, one of the most demanding pieces written for soprano in the 20th century and a real test for the soloist.

Natalia Labourdette and Gianluca Martinenghi

The solo voice is that of Natalia Labourdette, a soprano from Madrid with a career in Spain's leading opera houses, and the baton is held by Gianluca Martinenghi, an Italian conductor with long experience in the operatic repertoire. This listing does not include the time of the performances or the ticket prices: check them on the IMAE website, on the Orquesta de Córdoba's site or at the Gran Teatro box office, at Avenida del Gran Capitán, 3. With two dates it is easier to fit around Christmas visits and meals, and the centre of Córdoba at that time of year is an invitation to arrive on foot.
