What you will see
Zarzuela returns to the big screen with La verbena de la Paloma, by Tomás Bretón and Ricardo de la Vega, in the new production from the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia. Nuria Castejón is the stage director and moves the action to the Teatro Apolo in Madrid, where the work was premiered in 1894; the show opens with Adiós, Apolo, a comic-lyric prologue written by Álvaro Tato that strings together excerpts from other zarzuelas. José Miguel Pérez-Sierra conducts and the singers are Borja Quiza as Julián, Antoni Comas as Don Hilarión, Milagros Martín as Señá Rita, and Emilio Sánchez. Jealousy, street festivities and the earthy humour of turn-of-the-century Madrid.
