What's on
L'elisir d'amore, Gaetano Donizetti's comedy with a libretto by Felice Romani, is screened in the Wiener Staatsoper version: Otto Schenk's classic production, with sets and costumes by Jürgen Rose, revived in the 2022/23 season. Gianluca Capuano conducts the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera, and the cast is led by Maria Nazarova as Adina, Bogdan Volkov as Nemorino, Davide Luciano as Belcore and Alex Esposito as the quack Dulcamara. The story follows the young peasant who buys a supposed elixir to win over the wealthy Adina, and leads to one of the most famous endings in the repertoire, with the aria Una furtiva lagrima. A good way into opera for anyone who has never seen one.
