Campanilleros de la Aurora: night-time outing in Lucena

About the event

At midnight, the campanilleros de la Aurora leave their chapel and walk through Lucena's old town with guitars, handbells and voices singing the rosaries. It is a deeply rooted tradition of popular faith, and the following day the Virgen de la Aurora goes out in procession.

Key points

  • Setting out at midnight, on the night of Saturday 10 to Sunday 11 October
  • Guitars, handbells and sung rosaries through the old town
  • On Sunday 11 at 19:00 the Virgen de la Aurora goes out in procession

What it is

The campanilleros de la Aurora are one of Lucena's most distinctive traditions. As midnight approaches, the streets of the Aurora neighbourhood fill with the sound of guitars, handbells and voices singing the rosaries. It is an expression of popular faith that the Delegación de Turismo describes as part of Lucena's soul. The campanilleros walk through the old town and revive a custom that joins past and present. The outing is included in the programme of the V Días de la Red Europea de Celebraciones de Semana Santa y Pascua. The Aurora festivities continue the following day, Sunday 11 October, with the procession of the Virgen de la Aurora through the streets of the neighbourhood. It leaves the chapel at 19:00.

Getting there and tickets

The outing sets off from the chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Aurora, at calle Abad Serrano, 11, at 24:00 on Saturday 10 October, that is, in the early hours of Sunday 11. There is no ticket: just head to the Aurora neighbourhood and follow the route along the street. Sunday's procession also leaves from the chapel, at 19:00. Information is provided by Lucena's Delegación de Turismo (turlucena.com, 957 51 32 82) and the Turismo de la Subbética agenda.
