About the event

Every second Sunday in October, Villanueva de Córdoba carries its patron, the Virgen de Luna, shoulder-high from the parish church of San Miguel to her sanctuary in the Dehesa de la Jara. It is a 16th-century romería, a pilgrimage on foot, declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Andalucía and protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural.

What it is / What you will see

The Virgen de Luna is the patron shared by Villanueva de Córdoba and Pozoblanco, in Los Pedroches. She spends the summer in the parish church of San Miguel in Villanueva and on the second Sunday in October returns to her sanctuary in the Dehesa de la Jara, carried on the shoulders of the faithful. Going by the programme from other years, the day starts early with the praying of the Salve and the departure of the image. Then comes the official farewell at the Regajito, with clergy, town council and dignitaries, and the walk through the dehesa. The cofradía is documented from 1599. The romería is a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Andalucía and in 2026 the Junta protected it as a Bien de Interés Cultural, together with Pozoblanco's.

Getting there and tickets

The departure is from the parish church of San Miguel Arcángel, in the plaza de España in Villanueva de Córdoba, about 70 km from Córdoba on the N-502. According to previous years' programmes, the image leaves at 8:00. It is worth checking the 2026 time in the cofradía's programme. It is an open festival, free and with no ticket. On the preceding days there is a novena at San Miguel and a farewell procession through the town the evening before. It is organised by the Cofradía Hermandad de la Virgen de Luna de Villanueva de Córdoba.
