Fifteen Christmases singing Jerez

‘Así canta Jerez en Navidad’ was born fifteen years ago as a project to take to theatres the zambomba, the patio and street party with which Jerez de la Frontera welcomes Christmas. With production and musical direction by Luis de Perikín, the show brings together a group of more than twenty young artists from Jerez and has become one of December's fixtures across half of Spain, with stops at venues such as the Palau de la Música in Barcelona. The fifteenth anniversary tour revives the greatest hits of its history and adds new compositions inspired by the folklore of the traditional carol.

What you hear at a zambomba

The programme rests on flamenco carols, zambombas and traditional songs, the ones sung in chorus around the bonfire in Jerez. Handclaps, guitars, percussion and choruses surround every number, and the audience is invited to step into a warm, festive atmosphere ruled by spontaneity, rhythm and collective emotion. It is not a conventional recital: the strength of the show lies in the group, in the chorus that answers and in that moment when the stalls end up keeping the beat with their hands, as would happen in any patio in the Santiago or San Miguel neighbourhoods.

A zambomba Wednesday at the Gran Teatro

The performance is on Wednesday 9 December at 8 pm at the Gran Teatro de Córdoba, at Avenida del Gran Capitán, 3, as part of the IMAE programme. Tickets cost between 40 and 45 euros depending on the zone and are sold through the theatre itself. It is an early date in Córdoba's Christmas, when the centre usually already has its lights up and the school holidays have not yet begun, so it goes well with a stroll around Las Tendillas and Cruz Conde before going in. This guide does not organise the show: it simply lists the theatre's public information.
