Montilla looks to New Granada

The Montilla History and Heritage Conference reaches its fifteenth edition with an American theme: episodes from the Viceroyalty of New Granada, the territory now occupied by Colombia and its neighbours. It takes place on Friday 6 November 2026 from 9:30 at the Castillo del Gran Capitán, organised by Montilla Town Council in collaboration with the University of Córdoba, its School of Agricultural and Forestry Engineering and the Consejo Regulador de Montilla-Moriles.

Programme of talks

Alfonso García Ferrer Porras opens with the defence of Cartagena de Indias in 1741 by Blas de Lezo and viceroy Eslava. Next come Lucía Chacón Ledesma on the Guarani wars and Carmen Gema González Miaja on residencia trials and the case of viceroy Solís. After a break, Francisco Montes Tubío talks about Antonio Caballero y Góngora, archbishop and viceroy of Santafé between 1778 and 1788; José Antonio Entrenas Angulo, about the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, and Jerónimo Sanz Cabrera, about the evolution of fortifications. José Rey García closes with a guided visit to the Museo del Gran Capitán.

Registration

Attendance is free, but registration is compulsory and places are limited. You need to sign up by Tuesday 3 November, while places remain, by sending an e-mail to ir1motuf@uco.es or juradopacoes@gmail.com.
