Quince takes centre stage in Zagrilla
Zagrilla, a village belonging to Priego de Córdoba in the heart of the Subbética, devotes a weekend every autumn to quince and San Rafael. The Asociación Cultural Zagrilla holds the festival at the village sports centre on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October, with music, food and quince sweets for sale. Priego de Córdoba Town Council and several local businesses lend their support. The Priego tourism website lists it until the 26th, but the association's poster only announces Saturday 24 and Sunday 25.
Saturday: breakfast, paella and music
Saturday 24 starts at 9:30 with the quince breakfast. At 14:00 the festival marquee opens with a paella, at 17:00 the duo 2 de Abril plays and at 18:30 the tortillas de masa with hot chocolate arrive. Entry to the grounds is free; the poster does not say whether food and drink are charged separately, so it is wise to bring some cash just in case. The Priego tourism website describes the festival as free.
Sunday: mass for San Rafael and carrillada
Sunday 25 begins at 9:00 with holy mass in honour of San Rafael, who shares the festival with the quince. At 14:30 carrillada in sauce is served, at 16:00 the Grupo Musical Abril plays and at 18:00 the tortillas de masa with hot chocolate return to close the weekend. On both days there are quince sweets made in the area for sale, a good souvenir to take home from Zagrilla. The festival is open to locals and visitors alike.
