A landfill with a name of its own
Cateura is a landfill in Paraguay, on the outskirts of Asunción, one of the thousands there are in the world, where tonnes of waste nobody wants arrive every day. Its inhabitants scrape a living recycling and sorting rubbish, and out of that place came a famous orchestra that plays instruments made from waste. The show borrows the name to tell the whole voyage of rubbish: it leaves homes and streets in plastic bags, passes through treatment plants, reaches the sea by water or travels by ship when rich countries send their waste to poor ones, and piles up in uncontrolled dumps.
Circus to tell it without speeches
Alas Circo Teatro and Lapso Producciones share the authorship; Lapso directs and Alas adapts. On stage are Juan Manuel Sánchez Villegas and María Jesús Buffa, who draw on circus, music, object manipulation and acrobatic movement to bring that journey of waste to light. The set is by Juan Manuel Sánchez, Anselmo Paulino, Nuevo Fielato and Utopía Colors, and the costumes by Volares de Txus. The city's event page presents it as a piece for all ages that invites us to think about our impact on the planet and about a more sustainable world, without preaching.
Sunday at midday at the Góngora
The performance is on Sunday 18 October at 12:00 at the Teatro Góngora, on Calle Jesús María in Córdoba, as part of the programme of the IMAE, the Instituto Municipal de Artes Escénicas. Tickets cost 8 euros, a single price that makes it one of the most affordable family outings of the autumn in the city. The midday slot fits in with a stroll around the centre beforehand and lunch afterwards. Tickets are sold through the IMAE's usual channels; the page on teatrocordoba.es has the details and the theatre's phone number for enquiries. The running time has not been published.
