Four caliphs in the same cemetery
Córdoba calls its five great bullfighters the caliphs of bullfighting, and four of them rest in the Cemetery of Nuestra Señora de la Salud: Rafael Molina “Lagartijo” (1841-1900), who dominated bullfighting for nearly thirty years; Rafael Guerra “Guerrita” (1862-1941), who took the alternative from Lagartijo himself in Madrid in 1887; Rafael González “Machaquito” (1880-1955), famous for his skill with the sword against Miura bulls; and Manuel Rodríguez “Manolete” (1917-1947), the most legendary postwar bullfighter. Cecosam, the municipal cemetery company, includes them among the cemetery’s illustrious inhabitants.
Where each tomb is located
According to Cecosam, Manolete’s grave is in the San Nicolás courtyard, number 18/41; Guerrita’s in the San Francisco de Borja courtyard; Lagartijo’s in San Julián; and Machaquito’s in the so-called Jardinito alto, on the left. La Salud also holds the remains of mayors José and Antonio Cruz Conde and the poet Pablo García Baena, from the Cántico Group, to whom Cecosam dedicates a recital in its columbarium on Saturday, October 31 at 11:30.
Special hours for All Saints
From October 23 to November 2, inclusive, the municipal cemeteries are open continuously from 08:30 to 19:30, with free admission. These are busy days, with more than 50,000 visits expected, especially on November 1, so the early morning hours and weekdays are the quietest times to visit the courtyards. The cemetery is on Avenida de los Custodios, and Aucorsa reinforces line E with stops at the entrances.
