An evening of ánimas in the Villa neighborhood

La Villa Velada is a staple event of the Semana de Ánimas in Priego de Córdoba, the program through which the City Council revives local traditions for the Day of the Dead. In 2026 it reaches its sixth edition and takes place on Saturday, October 31, starting at 6:30 pm. The Villa neighborhood, the oldest part of Priego, with its narrow whitewashed streets, debuts special lighting and decoration for the occasion. It is organized by the Heritage and Tourism Promotion Area, the Priego Youth Zone, and the Villa neighborhood association, with the collaboration of the Hermandad de la Caridad.

Fritters, porridge, and chestnuts on the Pasaje de Ánimas

The walk follows the so-called Pasaje de Ánimas, where you can taste the most traditional flavors of this time of year. The Hermandad de la Caridad sells fritters at their brotherhood house, and on Calle Real there is porridge and roasted chestnuts. The municipal program also mentions traditional ánimas sweets. Walking through the neighborhood is free; food is paid for at each stand.

Melon lanterns before the Velada

The afternoon starts a little earlier with the melon lantern workshop, a Priego tradition returning this year to the Villa neighborhood. It takes place at 5:00 pm in the neighborhood itself, and you need to bring a melon and a spoon. That same night, from October 31 to November 1, the Hermanos de la Aurora sing their Cantos de Ánimas in the chapel of the Santo Cristo cemetery.
