What you will see
To mark World Tourism Day, the Museo de Bellas Artes de Córdoba is devoting a small exhibition to David Roberts (1796-1864), one of the most celebrated travelling painters of British Romanticism. Roberts toured Spain between 1832 and 1833 and published his sketches in “Picturesque Sketches in Spain” (1837), the source of the three lithographs on show. They depict the riverfront with the Roman bridge, the mills and the Mezquita-Catedral in the background; the Albolafia mill beside the remains of the Umayyad aqueduct and the Puerta del Puente; and the courtyard of a former mosque. The exhibition explains how those prints, which served as travel guides, helped to build Córdoba's monumental image in the eyes of Europe and laid the foundations of tourism.
