What you will hear
The fourth subscription programme of the Orquesta de Córdoba brings together two choral works. It opens with Brahms's Alto Rhapsody, which starts from some sombre lines by Goethe and ends in a passage of consolation, and which the orchestra performs for the first time. Then comes the symphony-cantata Lobgesang, Op. 52, ‘Hymn of Praise’, which Mendelssohn wrote to celebrate four hundred years of Gutenberg's printing press as a song to the light of knowledge. The singers are soprano Sydney Mancasola, mezzo Adèle Charvet and tenor Luigi Morassi, together with the Coro de Ópera de Córdoba. The conductor is Salvador Vázquez, the orchestra's principal conductor and artistic director.
