A series for Averroes' 900 years
The University of Córdoba celebrates the ninth centenary of the birth of Averroes, the Cordoban philosopher, physician and jurist, with the lecture series “The Journey of Knowledge: Averroes, a before and after in the history of humanity.” It began on September 28 and runs until December 9, 2026, with talks by researchers from Spanish and foreign universities explaining how his ideas spread to other cultures and why they remain relevant. Each session changes venue: institutes named after the Cordoban scholar, central faculties and the Rabanales campus.
Remaining sessions
On Wednesday, October 28 at 12:00, Mariano Gómez Aranda (CSIC) speaks at IES Maimónides about how Jewish authors transmitted Averroes' scientific works. At the Faculty of Medicine, on November 4 at 18:45, Rafael Ramón Guerrero (Universidad Complutense) presents Averroes as philosopher and commentator, and on November 12 at the same time Pedro Mantas España (UCO) explains Latin Averroism of the 13th and 14th centuries. On November 18 at 18:00, José Meirinhos (University of Porto) links Averroes with the origins of modern reason at Philosophy and Letters, and on November 25 at 18:00 Luca Burzelli (Pompeu Fabra) discusses Averroism as heresy in the Renaissance, again at Medicine.
Closing and how to attend
The series closes on Wednesday, December 9 at 11:00 with a round table, “Averroes, a before and after,” at the Averroes Lecture Hall of the Rabanales Campus, moderated by Ramón Román Alcalá and featuring Jesús de Garay, Serena Masolini and Josep Puig Montada. All sessions are free, with free entry until full capacity. Venues are IES Maimónides (calle Alfonso XIII 4), Faculty of Medicine and Nursing (avenida Menéndez Pidal), Faculty of Philosophy and Letters (plaza del Cardenal Salazar 3) and Rabanales (carretera de Madrid, km 396).
