Fifteen years of flamenco as heritage
In November 2010 UNESCO inscribed flamenco on the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Fifteen years on, the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía, the Junta's public company, celebrates it with ‘Flamenco Patrimonio’, a production designed to set tradition and contemporary creation in dialogue. The Córdoba date is Saturday 21 November at the Gran Teatro, as part of the IMAE programme. The show arrives after appearing on stages such as the Teatro Alhambra in Granada and the Teatro Central in Seville, and it also serves to mark the company's thirty-year history since it was founded by Mario Maya.
Patricia Guerrero and the generational handover
Artistic direction and choreography are by Patricia Guerrero, a flamenco dancer from Granada and winner of the Premio Nacional de Danza, for whom this piece is her fourth production at the head of the Ballet. The production reflects the generational handover the company is going through and its role as a leading institution in the preservation, research and dissemination of flamenco. On stage she is joined by guest artist Sergio ‘El Colorao’, the singing of Amparo Lagares and Manuel de Gines, the guitars of Jesús Rodríguez and José Luis Medina and the percussion of David Chupete, with Eduardo Leal as rehearsal director and lighting design by Olga García.
Two movements, from Pavón to Morente
The work is structured in two large movements. The first travels through different soundscapes of flamenco, from the elegance of Arturo Pavón to peteneras, romances and verdiales. The second is a tribute to Granada: it evokes the Albaicín and the Sacromonte and ends with a reinterpretation of the artistic legacy of Enrique Morente. The programme links nine numbers: ‘Noche de Triana’, ‘Polo’, ‘Fe, te habito’, ‘Caminos malagueños’, ‘Corridos y romances’, ‘Aljibe’, ‘Sacromonte’, ‘Maestro’ and ‘Eterno’. It is a reading of flamenco that preserves the heritage while making way for new stage languages and new generations of artists.
Tickets and practical details
The Gran Teatro is at Avenida del Gran Capitán, 3, right in the centre of Córdoba, a stone's throw from Las Tendillas. The performance starts at 8 pm and tickets cost between 12 and 30 euros, on sale on the IMAE website and at the theatre's own box office. As this is an institutional company with a single performance in Córdoba, it is best not to leave buying until the last minute. This guide does not organise the show or sell tickets: it simply lists the theatre's public programme so that you do not miss any date of the season.
