The writer from Cabra Antonio Jesús Morante Pineda presents his new historical novel at the Instituto Aguilar y Eslava. It brings back Marcus Cornelius Novatus Baebius Balbus, a figure from ancient Igabrum. It is published by Cuadranta.

What it is

Antonio Jesús Morante Pineda, a writer from Cabra and populariser of ancient history, presents ‘Aegabrum: La sangre de Alalia y la sombra bátava’, published by Cuadranta. The novel continues the universe he opened with ‘Aegabrum: el origen de Cabra’. It is set in the first century, in the midst of the crisis of the Empire after the death of Nero, and also travels to archaic Greece, Phocaea and Massalia, the battle of Alalia and the Greek expansion across the western Mediterranean. One of its protagonists is Marcus Cornelius Novatus Baebius Balbus, a real figure from ancient Igabrum. He was provincial flamen of Baetica and is linked to the building of the city's Roman aqueduct. The author did his research at archaeological sites and museums in Greece.

Getting there

The official launch will be on Saturday 14 November 2026 at the Instituto Aguilar y Eslava in Cabra, one of the town's historic buildings, in the heart of the town centre.
