About the event

The first exhibition in Spain of Frédéric Bruly Bouabré (1923-2014), a leading figure in contemporary African art and creator of the “Alfabeto Bété”. More than 150 drawings from the Colección Pi Fernandino, photographs, a documentary and the facsimile “Knowledge of the World”.

What it is

The Espacio Gala is hosting the first exhibition in Spain of Frédéric Bruly Bouabré (Zéprégühé, Ivory Coast, 1923 – Abidjan, 2014), an emblematic figure in contemporary African art. He is known around the world for creating the “Alfabeto Bété”, a writing system in pictograms with which he sought to preserve the language and tradition of his people. He exhibited at MoMA in New York, was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France and received awards from the Dakar Biennale, Kora All Africa and the Ford Foundation. The exhibition, curated by Bruno Leitão, brings together more than 150 drawings from the Colección Pi Fernandino (1979-2009), photographs, a documentary video and the facsimile “Knowledge of the World”, with its 190 pictograms.

Getting there and tickets

The exhibition is at the Espacio Gala, home of the Fundación Antonio Gala para Jóvenes Creadores, at calle Ambrosio de Morales, 20, in Córdoba's historic centre. It opened on 16 September and can be visited until 29 October 2026. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00, and Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 to 14:00.
