  • Teatro Góngora, Calle Jesús María, Córdoba
  • Tickets from 14 to 18 euros
  • Circus and flamenco with five performers on stage

Where the jaleo turns into a circus

‘What an alboroto! What a jaleo! This is a circus!’ That is how the piece introduces itself: jaleo, the shouts and clapping that spur performers on, is flamenco, and a lot of jaleo is a circus. Two worlds meet in a single word, because alboroto (commotion) sits at the point equidistant between circus and flamenco. It is a resonant, lovely word of Arabic heritage, and both circus and flamenco know a great deal about heritage. The company wants to talk precisely about those little-seen connections between the two, and it does so with a show that the IMAE listing describes as joyful and madcap, made for having a good time rather than taking notes.

Who is on stage

The cast is made up of Germán López, Rebeca Pérez, Clara Reina, Asunción Pérez ‘Choni’ and Javier Prieto. It is written by Gonzalo Andino and Germán López and directed by Greta García, a dancer and creator from Seville. Morgan Cosquer accompanied the creative process as an outside eye and Anna Jonsson advised on the staging. According to the company, the production brings together a flamenco troupe and a circus group who end up forming a family, with acrobatics, aerial rope, hoops, castanets and live cajón. The municipal listing gives neither a running time nor a recommended age.

Sunday evening at the Góngora

The performance is on Sunday 15 November at 7 pm at the Teatro Góngora, on Calle Jesús María, in the centre of Córdoba. Tickets cost between 14 and 18 euros depending on the zone and are sold through the IMAE, the Instituto Municipal de Artes Escénicas; teatrocordoba.es has the full listing and the theatre's telephone number. Alboroto is part of the events with which Córdoba marks the anniversary of UNESCO's declaration of flamenco as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on 16 November 2010, the same occasion that brings Fetén to the Góngora ten days earlier.
